Inspired by the Black and Indigenous soldiers that enlisted, James was determined to join the fight too.

Soon after the colonies gained their independence, it became clear to James and many others that the new government did not intend to uphold the tenets of the Declaration of Independence. Undeterred, James devoted the rest of his life to mending America into the nation it had promised to be.

Kesha L. Grant is an educator and children's book author. During her twenty years as an educator, Kesha struggled to find books that represented the rich cultural diversity of her students. Frustrated, Kesha decided to channel her energy by pursuing a writing career. She holds an MFA in Writing for Children and Young Adults from Hamline University, where she discovered a love for writing about unsung heroes, like James Forten.
